50592 CCTV not working at Cannon Street station

May 2012 in London Underground

tagged Equipment Security Work environment South East

Concerns have been raised that the CCTV cameras at Cannon Street station have not been working since early 2011. It is believed this is due to refurbishment works currently being undertaken at the station.

The reporter feels that whilst works are being carried out it is important for the cameras to be operational for the safety of both passengers and staff.

Could London Underground:

  • Comment on the current status of the CCTV cameras at the station?
  • Ensure that any outstanding faults are rectified so that all of the cameras are in full working order?

Response from London Underground

London Underground would like to thank the reporter for raising their concern.

The cameras at Cannon Street are all in working order. It is believed that the concerns outlined in the report centre around the recording and playback of the CCTV images. Recently there was an assault at the station where it came to light that not all of the cameras were recording and that the playback facility was withdrawn from the station sometime ago.

The recording system has since been checked and all faults have been rectified. A procedure has also been implemented for the recorded tapes to be checked to ensure good quality recordings have been taken.

In addition staff have been reminded that within Rule Book 11, 'Station Management' section 3.2 it states that the Supervisor should carry out certain checks daily on CCTV and recording equipment between the hours of 02:00 and 04:00.
