50710 Lack of risk assessments for S stock trains

July 2012 in London Underground

tagged Method of working Rolling stock Rules and procedures South East

A reporter is concerned that fleet maintenance is being carried out on the new S stock trains without the required risk assessments in place.

Risk assessments would normally cover every task, including manual handling, to ensure safe working on the trains. The reporter states that risk assessments have been carried out for all the older stock, but not for S stock trains.

Could London Underground:

  • Explain why there are no risk assessments for S stock trains?
  • State when they will be in place to ensure the safety of staff?

Response from London Underground

London Underground would like to thank the reporter for raising their concern about the lack of workplace risk assessments for S stock trains.

Neasden depot currently have risk assessments for the maintenance tasks they carry out on the S stock trains, which are train preparation and three types of exam - A, B and C.

All the other maintenance tasks are completed by Bombardier Transport UK. Once they are handed over to the depot workplace risk assessments for these tasks will be introduced.
