The state of a walkway known as the 'Bristol Mile' between Bristol Temple Meads and Barton railway sidings is very uneven and poorly maintained according to a reporter. This is presenting a slip, trip and fall hazard to staff.
Despite new lights being recently installed, some areas of the walking route are still poorly lit. Also, there are no clear markings to distinguish where people can and cannot walk which could be dangerous as vehicles also use the walkway.
The reporter would like Network Rail to:
Network Rail would like to thank the reporter for bringing their concerns to our attention.
Network Rail have now carried out an assessment of the 'Bristol Mile' and agree with the reporter that the shared access for vehicles and staff walking could be made safer.
Network Rail are responsible for a section of the Bristol Mile which allows access to both its own infrastructure and to the DB Schenker depot.
Network Rail will carry out the access upgrade to the section it is responsible for. The proposed upgrade to the walking route should be completed by March 2011. The upgrade will provide a level walking surface and marked area for staff to walk so that vehicles and walkers will be separated. It will also reduce the amount of slip, trip and fall hazards that are currently present.
As part of the Network Rail assessment, it was found that lighting installations are working correctly along the section it is responsible for; however, a single lamp had failed which has now been rectified.
The lighting levels were also checked and Network Rail can confirm that they exceed the minimum levels required by the current Railway Group Standard. However, Network Rail currently have plans to renew the lighting installation in the next financial year on a like for like basis as a minimum; but with modern technology and advancements, it is hoped that the new products will improve existing lighting levels as far as cost and environmental considerations will allow. Network Rail is aware of its responsibility to provide safe access and egress and is now working to rectify the problem raised by the reporter.
