Special inspection technology is used to investigate a concern over vegetation blocking drivers' view of a signal.

A reporter raised concerns after spotting vegetation blocking the driver's view of a railway signal—P580—on the East Coast main line. The reporter warned that poor visibility could increase the risk of a train passing the signal at danger (SPAD). They asked for the vegetation to be removed and for a longterm solution to stop the problem returning.

The concern was investigated using automated intelligent video review (AIVR): this digital inspection system provides clear images of an affected area without the need for immediate on-site access. This allowed the team to assess the issue quickly, safely, and accurately.

The vegetation has now been removed, restoring a clear view of the signal. The area will continue to be monitored throughout the growing season to help prevent future obstructions.

The swift response to the report shows how technology can support safer, more effective maintenance of the railway.
